Schmidt Supports Bipartisan Effort to Provide Financial Relief to Family Caregivers
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Derek Schmidt (KS-02) today announced he has cosponsored the Credit for Caring Act. The legislation would ensure family caregivers can financially continue to provide care services for their loved ones by establishing an annual tax credit of up to $5,000.
Nearly 1 in 5 Kansas adults is a caregiver according to the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.
“Family caregivers play a vital role in many Kansans’ lives,” Congressman Schmidt said. “Caregiving is often a full-time job that requires a large amount of dedicated time and financial resources. By providing some financial breathing room, our bipartisan effort will ensure family caregivers in Kansas and across the country can continue to provide the services their loved ones rely on.”
The Credit for Caring Act is supported by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Impact Movement, Home Care Association of America, Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) Action, Family Business Coalition, and American Seniors Housing Association.
BACKGROUND
Originally introduced by Congressman Mike Carey (OH-15), H.R. 2036, the Credit for Caring Act of 2025, would create a new, nonrefundable tax credit of up to $5,000 for working family caregivers.
There are an estimated 48 million caregivers in the United States. 85% of the nearly 1 in 5 Kansas adults who are caregivers are unpaid. According to the AARP, caregivers spend an average of $7,242 on care costs, which is 26% of their annual income.
By establishing this tax credit, the Credit for Caring Act helps America’s caregivers continue to provide the services their loved ones rely on without facing financial ruin.
