Schmidt Joins Effort to Secure America’s Elections

April 18, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Derek Schmidt (KS-02) announced today he has cosponsored the Voter Eligibility Verification Act. Introduced by Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (TX-24), the Voter Eligibility Verification Act would require the federal government to cooperate with states seeking to verify the eligibility of voters.

“The Biden border crisis has placed unprecedented value on systems for verifying citizenship,” Congressman Schmidt said. “The federal government needs to be a good partner to state officials trying to protect our country by securing our elections. Like the overwhelming majority of Kansans, I believe we need to take every step necessary to enforce the requirement that only American citizens are able to vote in America’s elections. I hope my colleagues feel the same so we can swiftly pass this legislation with bipartisan support.”

BACKGROUND

H.R. 1037, the Voter Eligibility Verification Act of 2025, would require U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to verify the immigration status of potential voters within 15 days of a request by a state attorney general or secretary of state.
