Derek Schmidt Sworn into Congress to Represent Kansas’ Second District
Former Attorney General, State Senate Majority Leader Brings Years of Public Service and Legal Experience to Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Derek Schmidt released the following statement after being sworn into Congress to represent Kansas’ Second District on January 3, 2025:
“I’m honored to represent Kansans in the United States Congress. Kansans deserve strong, conservative representation in government. My steady guidepost will always be what is best for Kansas’ Second District and for America.
“My top priority is - and always will be - the people of Kansas’ Second District. It’s time to get to work and put America First. I will focus on securing our borders, shrinking the size of the federal bureaucracy, cutting wasteful spending that drives prices higher, and restoring Americans’ faith in our government.”
BACKGROUND
A fifth-generation Kansan from Independence, Schmidt previously served 12 years as the 44th Attorney General of Kansas, where he focused on prosecuting crimes against children, protecting senior citizens from scams and rip-offs, recovering more than $1 billion for Kansas consumers and taxpayers, standing up against illegal overreach by the federal government, and providing professional legal services for the State of Kansas.
During his service as attorney general, Schmidt personally and successfully argued three Kansas cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He also led successful efforts to build a modern forensic science laboratory for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and to strengthen state human trafficking and consumer privacy laws.
Before being elected attorney general, Schmidt served as a Kansas State Senator representing part of Southeast Kansas, as chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and as Senate Majority Leader.
