Schmidt Applauds Passage of One Big Beautiful Bill
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Derek Schmidt (KS-02) today applauded the passage of H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. He released the following statement:
“A large majority of Kansans in the Second Congressional District chose President Trump’s America First agenda. This bill delivers much of it.
“We locked in tax relief for middle-class families, small businesses, and family farms; fully funded border security and the deportation of illegal aliens; and reduced the growth of federal spending more than ever before in U.S. history.
“We protected taxpayers by fighting waste, fraud, and abuse in federal programs; unleashed U.S. energy dominance; and rebuilt and modernized America’s national defenses, including building the Golden Dome missile defense system for our homeland.
“We strengthened federal safety net programs by requiring healthy adults to work to receive public benefits and enforcing the prohibition on illegal aliens receiving public benefits. We also increased payments to rural hospitals and other healthcare providers in states like Kansas that have declined to expand Medicaid under Obamacare.
“We reformed the federal regulatory system to ensure accountability; codified several of President Trump’s executive orders; and advanced significant portions of the long-overdue Farm Bill.
“We invested in air safety while repealing the Green New Deal’s tax breaks for big corporations and billionaires.
“On top of all that, we advanced new tax relief for working families, including: no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on car loans to buy American-made vehicles, and tax relief for seniors who receive Social Security.
“This bill is not perfect; no legislation is. There is much more to do to get our country back on track; however, it goes a long way toward cleaning up the unsustainable big-government mess made by the prior administration and its enablers. I encourage the Senate to act swiftly to approve it so President Trump can sign it into law.”
BACKGROUND
The United States’ gross national debt now surpasses $36 trillion and is equal to 123% of gross domestic product, the highest spending since World War II. H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, makes the first meaningful federal spending reforms in decades.
H.R. 1 locks in tax relief initially passed as a part of President Trump’s landmark 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. If these provisions are allowed to expire at the end of the year, the average family of four in the Second District will see a $1,147 tax increase. H.R. 1 also prevents 46,300 small businesses across the Second District from being hit with a tax increase to as much as a 43.4% tax rate.
Additionally, H.R. 1 codifies President Trump’s successful border security policies by providing funding for completion of the border wall, at least 1 million annual removals, and 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel. The legislation also institutes a sweeping expansion of immigration fees, ensuring taxpayers aren’t left paying the tab for the Biden border crisis.
